Sedation and anaesthesia cover a continuum, which ranges from
mild anxiolysis with little drowsiness, all the way to general anaesthesia. These
services can be beneficial, and sometimes essential for patients in dentistry. The
aim of this presentation is to define the different levels of anaesthesia, briefly
discuss the methods and modalities of achieving these levels, and to outline their
indications in dentistry. We will also discuss aspects of the new RCDSO Standard of
Practice in the “Use of Sedation and General Anaesthesia in the Dental Office.”
