Description: As the population ages, more and more patients are presenting seeking dental implant therapy. Many patients are interested in a permanent solution for their missing teeth, or to increase the retention of their dentures. Whilst implants have been shown to be reliable long-term in the healthy, non-smoking population, case selection remains paramount in figuring out which patients are good candidates for dental implant therapy. This presentation aims to review the basics of dental implants, aid in case selection, and speak about surgical aids that can be used to help facilitate proper placement.

Learning Objectives: Upon completion, participants will be able to:

1) Basic understanding of pre-surgical consultation for patients seeking dental implants

2) Basics of dental implantology

3) Proper case selection and triage

4) Basics of bone grafting and when it is necessary

5) Surgical aids for dental implant placement

Speaker: Dr. Wendall Mascarenhas, DDS, MD, CM, FRCD(C)

Dr. Wendall Mascarenhas was born and raised in Toronto and attended York University for his undergraduate education. He then completed dental school at the University of Western Ontario where he graduated top of his class achieving 12 awards including the UWO Gold Medal. After completing a General Practice Residency (GPR) at the London Health Sciences Centre, he moved to Montreal to complete a six-year OMFS/MD combined surgical residency at McGill University. His passion for orthognathic surgery and facial trauma led him to then pursue a fellowship at the Carolinas Center for Oral and Facial Surgery in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Dr. Mascarenhas owns and operates Four Corners Oral Surgery, a private practice located in Brampton that prides itself in treating the full scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery. In addition, he is a part-time faculty member of the University of Toronto’s Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery department. His responsibilities include running a weekly hospital clinic at Mt. Sinai hospital, taking calls, giving lectures to the residents and dental students, and supervising the jaw surgery clinic at the Faculty.

In 2020, Dr. Mascarenhas created the Teeth & Titanium podcast, a monthly oral surgery podcast that is supported by the Canadian Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (CAOMS) and released each month. He also serves on the executive committee of the CAOMS as the Membership Chair.

Dr. Mascarenhas maintains hospital and operative privileges at the Brampton Civic, Etobicoke General, and Mt. Sinai hospitals. This allows him to treat medically compromised or surgically challenging cases in a hospital environment, including cases of facial trauma, jaw surgery, and oral pathology.

Dr. Mascarenhas has been published numerous times in world-renowned journals including the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (JOMS), the International Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (IJOMS), and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Cases. One of the projects he is most proud of is CTRead and MRRead; online courses that he created from scratch in order to educate residents and staff on the proper interpretation of CT and MRI scans of the face.

When not operating, podcasting, or teaching, Wendall enjoys watching and playing sports, catching up on the latest Netflix documentaries, and spending time with his wife Byanca and their son Lennox.
