Description:  An apical plug has typically been used to treat immature permanent necrotic teeth with open apices. This technique involves either the application of long-term calcium hydroxide or immediate placement of a mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) plug. Necrotic immature permanent teeth can be managed by using an MTA apical plug. An MTA apical plug encourages the formation of a calcified barrier at the end of a root canal, which facilitates the vertical condensation of warm gutta percha. An MTA plug is effective and biocompatible, has great sealing ability, and can be performed in one single visit. Despite the ability to provide a seal and allow obturation, these techniques do not result in increased root length or width development. An alternative treatment option for immature permanent teeth with open apices is regenerative endodontic therapy The goal of this treatment alternative is not only to result in healing of any apical lesions, but also to gain root dentin thickness and restore the pulp dentin complex .

• Recognize why traditional root canal treatment may not be possible because of trauma or infection.
• Identify some disadvantages of calcium hydroxide apexification.
• Identify some advantages & disadvantages  of MTA apexification.
• Realize some background of regenerative endodontic therapy (RET).
• Realize some science related to platelet-rich fibrin (PRF).

Speaker:  Dr. Mike Sabeti received his DDS degree from University of Texas, Dental Branch at Houston. He completed his specialty training in Periodontics at Tufts School of Dental Medicine. He served at post-graduate, department of periodontology at University of Texas, Dental Branch at Houston. He then completed his specialty training in Endodontics at Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry. He has been a member of the American Dental Education Association, ADEA PASS (ADEA Postdoctoral Application Support Service) for the past three years.  He currently serves as the Director of the Advanced Specialty Education Program in Endodontics at the University of California, San Francisco School of Dentistry and chair of PECC at the University of California at San Francisco. He is also the current president of the Northern California Academy of Endodontics.  He is board certified and a diplomat of the American Board of Endodontics. He has been an invited presenters to multiple forums and has published along with several textbook chapters and textbooks.  In addition, he has received a Certificate in Recognition of Outstanding Services as a Faculty Member to the enhancement of education and clinical excellence, presented by the Advance Endodontics Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry of University of Southern California, and Certificate of Appreciation for the Service and Significant Contribution to Periodontal Division, University of Texas Dental Branch. He was honored by Haile T. Debas Academy of Medical Educators at the University of California San Francisco with an Excellence in teaching awards.
